Ahh, Grittys! One of the best places we’ve found in Maine! Good food, great beer, and entertainment for the kids (at the Freeport location that is.) Where else can you sit on the back deck, eat great local fare, drink extremely flavorful beer, and not have to worry about the kids disturbing your meal! “Kids not bothering you while you eat?” Yup. Gritty’s in Freeport has a fenced in yard off their deck with a playhouse and swing set, and plenty of yard to run around.
While the Freeport location does get nuts during tourist season, we’ve rarely not been able to get a seat on the deck during the warm weather season (although some times there is a wait, but it’s well worth it if you have kids.) For the young readers in your family, check out the basket of books they have next to the left-side bar! They also hand out place-mats, with drawing games on them, and crayons!
Gritty’s also has a location in the Old Port section of Portland (and one in Lewiston/Auburn, but we’ve never been there.) The issue we have with the Portland location is that it’s not kid friendly. No place to play, and the service seems to be more for the drinking/eating crowd. We stopped in there one rainy afternoon and the service was horrible. Our kids were hungry and beginning to go nuts, and the wait staff wasn’t around. When they did show up, and handed out the same place-mats as the Freeport location, they told us they didn’t carry crayons. HUH?! You hand out place-mats to kids, place-mats with mazes and drawing games on them, and then don’t hand the kids crayons! NOT GOOD! (To be fair we did stop by a couple of times without the kids, and it wasn’t bad. But it’s a typical pub, nothing more.)
Gritty’s in Freeport gets a HUGE thumbs up from MtM!
